Teach your players to perform essential hockey skills at high speeds in confined areas.
Jim Johnson, a 13-year veteran of the NHL, believes that presenting competitive play in confined areas in practice will have tremendous carry over into game situations. These games promote problem solving, create a fun atmosphere, encourage creativity, simulate game like situations and provides instructional practice time for problem solving.
Johnson shows you 10 confined area games you can easily implement into your practice. Johnson discusses ways to vary the drills to make them adaptable to any team or situation. Each game has a specific skill theme that include passing, puck protection, breakouts, 2-on-2, 3-on-2, transition, defensive zone coverage, low zone play, 4-on-2, competitive goal tending play and reading and reacting. Johnson diagrams and explains each drill to make implementation simple.
Using these games will enable you to simulate game-like, competitive situations in your practices while maximizing touches for your players!
with Bill Beaney, Head Coach, Middlebury College 8X D-III NCAA Champions; and Tim Gerrish, former Union College Head Coach
These competitive hockey games use small groups of players, small areas of ice, and short shifts to create intense, game-like situations and ultimately a high level of play. All of these drills take place inside the blue line and are played cross-ice to create a small ice surface. Coaches Beaney and Gerrish use this chaos with a purpose approach to enhance player skills and improve hockey sense. The games are modified by putting the goals in various positions, using more than one puck, limiting where players are allowed to move, and creating and eliminating rules.
with Shawn Walsh, coaching legend, former University of Maine Head Coach
Shawn Walsh designs and demonstrates a series of highly competitive hockey drills to keep your practices intense and to utilize the full ice surface. The drill work is divided into three segments: flow drills, situational drills, and team drills. Flow drills warm-up your players, develop skills, and develop timing. Situational drills include many of the match-up situations that players will encounter during games. Team drills feature more end-to-end action and thus are great for teaching transition.

This tape features competitive cross-ice games, a drill to utilize the corners, and full-ice games. The games are designed to enhance your players passing, skating, conditioning, and scoring. Also, players will get a feel for puck support, transition, puck protection, and will become more familiar with situations they will face during a game. All of these games utilize goalies and a small number of players (4 vs. 4 or less) to increase touches on the puck for each player. These games will encourage your players to think when they're on the ice!
